Most of us adore our childhoods. Often nostalgic
memories always start with a place we once lived and only then proceed to people
and incidents. Well I am no different. My eyes gleam with pleasure when I think
of my school days. All my memories from those years are precious to me, the most
noteworthy being my love affair with plants. I was always attracted to the
different flora and fauna around me and could spend hours counting the numerous
shades of green that the different trees adorned after a rain.
I was
fortunate to live in a home that had huge garden space. We had a great garden
filled with veggie crops, flowering shrubs, cactus and shady trees. Buying banana leaf and curry leaves was unheard
off.
Gardening is
one physical work I thoroughly enjoy. Raking the leaves, dirtying my hands in
the mud and getting wet while watering the plants was my favourite after school
pastime. A lot of people used to call me show off because I would personally do
the work without waiting for a gardener.
Personally I
loved every moment of it and would have hated to trade it for video games or TV
time. My flowers, especially my red roses were my best friends and if I didn’t
spend at least some time everyday talking to them about my day, I would feel
miserable. This might seem strange to certain people. But only when actually
spend time in the company of plants and trees, you would realise how therapeutic
it can be. My mom always says that plants cannot survive only on good soil,
water or manure. They are like children who need a lot of attention, love and
guidance to grow and blossom.
I learnt many
lessons in my garden. These days’ people spend a lot and go on treks for bird
watching. But I had it all in my back yard. From humble Sparrows, Mynahs and
Crows to Parrots, etc. I had new friends all the time. Time to
time stray dogs and cats would join us as pets in giving them
company.
Doesn't it sound
like paradise or an exotic island? Sometimes even I find difficult to be believe
that I am living in such a setting. Life has changed now. Living in Bangalore
that to in Garden City College gives me such believe that I’m in home. These
memories will be always stay ever green in heart
forever.
